Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah is set to return to the Stadium of Light following his loan spell at AS Saint-Étienne, but discussions over a permanent transfer remain ongoing between the clubs.
Ekwah’s Mixed Season in France
The 23-year-old Frenchman made 30 appearances for Saint-Étienne last season, becoming a regular in midfield as the club fought against relegation from Ligue 1. Despite their eventual drop to the second tier, manager Kristofer Horneland has expressed his desire to retain Ekwah, praising the midfielder’s development.
“Ekwah had a great season in Ligue 1, which certainly gives him ambition,” Horneland said. “We’ll see if we can keep him at Saint-Étienne. We should know more in the next few days.”
Transfer Clause Complications
Sunderland included a reported £6 million option-to-buy clause in last summer’s loan deal, which also netted the Black Cats a seven-figure loan fee. However, Saint-Étienne’s relegation has cast doubt over their ability to meet the full valuation. Negotiations are ongoing, with the French club potentially seeking a reduced fee.
Ekwah is believed to be open to staying in France permanently, and Sunderland—who do not see him as part of their Premier League plans—are unlikely to block a move if an agreement is reached.
Financial Implications for Sunderland
A permanent sale would provide Sunderland with additional funds as they prepare for their top-flight return. The club has already secured a significant windfall from Jobe Bellingham’s record transfer to Borussia Dortmund and continues to offload fringe players.
Notably, West Ham United are entitled to a percentage of any fee due to a sell-on clause inserted when Ekwah moved to Sunderland in 2023.
Sunderland’s Midfield Reshuffle Continues
While Ekwah’s future remains unresolved, Sunderland have already bolstered their midfield options with the £17.5 million signing of Noah Sadiki from Union Saint-Gilloise. The Belgian youngster is expected to play a key role as the Black Cats strengthen for their Premier League campaign.
What’s Next?
Saint-Étienne’s financial situation post-relegation will likely dictate whether they can meet Sunderland’s asking price. Meanwhile, the Black Cats will hope for a quick resolution to free up funds and squad space for further reinforcements.
