Wrexham are looking for reinforcements this summer, and two prospective signings might push one man down the pecking order and possibly out the door.
With Championship football on the horizon, the Dragons are starting to prepare their players for the most difficult season in decades.
On that front, Phil Parkinson has already stated that players would leave Wrexham this summer, either to further their careers or to assist the club make room in their team.
The Welsh side now has 27 players aged 21 and up on their roster, despite Championship rules limiting registration to 25 players.
Given the necessity for several signings, some exits are expected in the summer, and supporters shouldn’t be surprised to see Luke Bolton and Will Boyle, who barely appeared in 2024/25, leave.
However, two prospective incomings may force one surprising name to hunt for a new club, either to ensure he continues to play frequently or because Wrexham requires more room in their squad.
Aaron Cresswell and Harry Diamond’s transfers to Wrexham could have a negative impact on one star.
The Hollywood-backed team had one of the greatest defensive records in League One last season, but it appears they are still aiming to improve in that area this summer.
It has been reported that Wrexham are interested in signing Aaron Cresswell when his contract with West Ham United expires next month.
Cresswell is a versatile defender who is a very capable, natural left-back but has transitioned to left-sided centre-back in his later years.
Wrexham were linked with Harry Darling earlier in May, as he too may be out of contract next month.
According to recent sources, Darling’s contract decision is expected soon, and if he rejects Swansea City, he could join the Red Dragons.
Darling is a versatile centre-back who can play on either the left or right side of the backline.
Both players have extensive experience and, if signed, would increase Wrexham’s centre-back choices to eight, which is likely to be at least one too many and may necessitate the departure of one player.
Thomas O’Connor could fall out of favour with new Wrexham arrivals.
Lewis Brunt, Eoghan O’Connell, Max Cleworth, Dan Scarr, Thomas O’Connor, and academy star Aaron James are the club’s current centre-back possibilities.
Brunt, O’Connell, and Cleworth were Wrexham’s main centre-backs in 2024/25, although Scarr received regular minutes at the end of the season after some outstanding performances en route to promotion.
James, meanwhile, still needs more experience, and it would be odd to see the club move him on given his clear potential.
So, if both Cresswell and Darling sign, it would likely mean O’Connor would need to leave, despite most fans probably not having him down as a potential exit this summer.
He was already low down the defensive pecking order last term, and additions of two higher-level defenders could mean he’s left in a similar position to Boyle was this term, who, even when injury-free, wasn’t really featuring because of squad rules and heavy competition.
