SWFC News: Owls Standout Proves His Class – Could Follow in Footsteps of £100m Trio.
One of Sheffield Wednesday’s standout performers this season has been nominated for a prestigious national award – and he’s competing against two fellow stars from promotion-chasing clubs.
Shea Charles has been a key figure in the heart of the Owls’ midfield, making 40 appearances across all competitions and registering five assists along the way. It’s been a season of growth and challenge for the Southampton loanee – his initial season-long deal was cut short by his parent club in January, only for him to return to Hillsborough on revised, higher terms. Despite the upheaval, he’s remained a vital presence in the team.
The Northern Ireland international, who has captained his country in what is essentially his first full season of regular senior football, has now received national recognition after being shortlisted for the EFL Championship Young Player of the Year award.
The nomination is further evidence of Charles’ talent. He is also the brother of Owls goalkeeper and fellow rising star Pierce Charles. Competing alongside him for the award are Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham and Burnley’s versatile CJ Egan-Riley – a former Manchester City academy teammate of Charles.
The award, in its current form since 2022, has previously been claimed by high-profile players including Brennan Johnson (then at Nottingham Forest, now at Tottenham Hotspur), Alex Scott (formerly of Bristol City, now at Bournemouth), and Archie Gray (then with Leeds United, now also at Tottenham Hotspur). Together, the trio have been transferred to Premier League clubs for a combined fee exceeding £100 million.
The winner will be announced during the League’s annual awards ceremony in London on Sunday, 27 April, with the event broadcast live on Sky Sports Football from 8:30pm.
