“That ship has now sailed” – West Brom told to avoid ex-Swansea City manager at all costs

After Carlos Corberan left for Valencia in January, Mowbray only made a second stint at The Hawthorns, but he was fired just before the season ended after winning just five of his 17 games in command, drawing four, and losing eight.

By the Baggies’ standards, the season was a letdown, as they finished ninth and four points shy of the playoffs. Failure to do so marked the end of Mowbray’s tenure as manager for a team that was predicted to finish in the top six for significant stretches of the season.

Journalist John Percy claims that although QPR manager Marti Cifuentes appeared to be the early favorite to take over the open position, the Baggies are “still going through the recruitment process” and no one has been offered the position. Percy also confirmed that Cifuentes is not currently on the club’s shortlist.

Luke Williams, the Swansea manager at the time, was mentioned as a potential replacement for Corberan in January, but Mowbray was ultimately chosen by the team. After a bad run of play, Williams was fired by the Swans a little more than a month later.

FLW’s resident West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, believes that the time has now gone regarding Williams, and hopes the club are searching for more ambitious possibilities instead.

“I’d be very surprised to see Luke Williams linked anywhere near to the Albion job, especially after what happened the last time supposed interest arose in him,” Callum told FLW.

He didn’t take it well at Swansea, and it appeared that his agent was attempting to obtain him a new contract or a respectable move there, only for everything to completely fall apart.

Notts County 80
Swansea City 58

“When the interest in Williams came, initially I was open to him becoming the Albion manager, because I don’t mind the style of football he likes to play.

“However, that ship has definitely sailed now. I’ve been startled to see the calibre of jobs he’s been linked to since leaving Swansea, League One and League Two jobs.

“However, I firmly believe that ship has set sail for Albion.”

The 43-year-old, who has been unemployed since February, has no prior experience fighting for promotion from the Championship, which is exactly what West Brom will be aiming for next term.

More ambitious options are sure to present themselves to the club over the next few weeks, and if they didn’t choose to approach him earlier this season, it’s hard to expect the Baggies to target Williams now.

It will be interesting to see who West Brom chooses to lead them next season, but it likely won’t be the former Swansea, Notts County, and Swindon coach.
