The 9-word jab that Roy Keane sent towards former Newcastle United man that Sunderland fans will love

The recent statement made by Roy Keane to Ruud Gullit’s face will be adored by Sunderland supporters.

In recent history, Sunderland’s rivalry with Newcastle United has produced a number of noteworthy occasions, especially for the Black Cats.

The Black Cats haven’t been in the same league as their noisy neighbors since the 2015–16 Premier League season, when Sam Allardyce’s team relegated the Magpies, but the rivalry still exists in the northeast despite Sunderland’s numerous demolitions of Newcastle United in the twenty-first century.

Both current and former players and coaches take use of the fervor of the fans and their contempt for the opposition, like Roy Keane did while he was manager of Wearside, as evidenced by his recent remarks to former Newcastle United player Ruud Gullit.

Ruud Gullit was the special guest on a recent edition of The Overlap. He talked about his playing career and, of course, his time as manager of Newcastle United in Tyneside.

Roy Keane replied sarcastically after expressing his happiness at seeing Eddie Howe’s side capture the trophy, saying, “There’s a bigger club down the road in Sunderland.”

As manager, Keane had his own run-ins with Newcastle United, most notably when Sunderland defeated the Magpies at home for the first time in 28 years.

However, as a player, he was the antagonist at St James’ Park after he famously slapped Alan Shearer while the referee was showing him the red card.

Sunderland is in a position to maybe bring back the Tyne-Wear derby.

Except for the 2023–2024 season, when Newcastle United defeated Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the EFL Cup, we haven’t seen a Tyne-Wear derby since Sunderland’s relegation to the Championship in the 2016–17 season.

With Regis Le Bris leading his team into the Championship play-offs, Sunderland has fortunately not been as close to returning to the top division as they are today.

The Black Cats’ current performance may put them in danger, but the playoffs are essentially a lottery, and Sunderland may win.

Since there aren’t many matches like the Tyne-Wear derby in English football, many people, even the neutrals, wanted it to return on a regular basis.
