‘The opportunity is there’ – Alex Neil opens door to 28-year-old for Millwall career revival

Millwall boss Alex Neil has said Kevin Nisbet will get a chance to stake his claim for a place in the squad once he’s back from injury.

Millwall have Kevin Nisbet back on the books after his season back north of the border with Aberdeen.

The Scot had struggled to make an impact at The Den in his maiden campaign and after dropping down the pecking order under Neil Harris, a temporary exit was sanctioned.

However, after 14 goals and five assists in 38 games for Aberdeen and with Alex Neil now at the helm in South London, it has been the expectation that Nisbet will get another opportunity to prove himself in the Championship.

Questions over that were prompted when Nisbet missed the Millwall pre-season training camp in Spain. However, it was confirmed the 28-year-old missed the trip though injury, and Neil has now made it clear that he will get his opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the side once he’s fit again.

Speaking to News At Den, Lions boss Neil said:

“I watched some of his games at Aberdeen.

“I spoke to him since we came back, I spoke to him in the summer before we came back in.

“We want to get Kevin fit. Unfortunately he’s injured at the moment but when he does get back fit the opportunity is there for him to try and stake his claim to get in the squad.

“So he’s like every other player we’ve got, there’s no differences, like I’ve said there’s no pre-conceived ideas on any player at the moment – everything is up for grabs.”

Competition for Millwall minutes

Nisbet rejoins a well-stocked Millwall strikers department, with some promising assets and goalscorers on the books at The Den.

The big name is Mihailo Ivanovic, whose impressive debut campaign in the Championship has many excited for his future. Josh Coburn has rejoined on a permanent basis and with a hefty fee paid for his services, the hope will be that he can stay fit and find prolific form in front of goal.

Macaulay Langstaff has interest and is tipped for a move away, while Ajay Matthews and Zak Lovelace are ones to watch for the future.

It seems Nisbet could easily emerge as third choice striker behind Ivanovic and Coburn, though chances to break into the XI will arise.
