Harry Darling has acknowledged that his decision to leave Swansea City for Carrow Road was ultimately influenced by Norwich City’s aspirations to qualify for the Premier League.
League rivals have fiercely opposed the Canaries’ attempt to sign the 25-year-old centre back. In addition to Birmingham City, Rangers, Sheffield United, and Wrexham, who were all interested in him, he declined Swansea’s new terms in favour of a transfer to Norfolk.
Darling and the Canaries have reached an agreement for a three-year contract with a one-year extension option.
He previously worked at MK Dons under Norwich manager Liam Manning. The defender, who was born in Cambridge, was an important part of his system and started 43 of the team’s 46 games during the regular season.

Last time around, Norwich’s season was incredibly disappointing. They fell far short of their previous term’s standings, which earned them a play-off position, and finished in the bottom half of the Championship.
What made Darling pick the Canaries more than the other bidders, then? According to him, it’s because they want to play in the Premier League.
“I think it always plays a part, but for me it’s a big step in my career, this next move,” Darling stated on Norwich’s YouTube page regarding the team’s aspirations to compete in the top flight. “The club and the future goals were more important than the location.
“Obviously, returning to the Premier League is the goal, according to Ben [Knapper], City’s sporting director, with whom I spoke. That fits with who I am and what I want to achieve. The location wasn’t a major factor, but it clearly helps.
According to the 25-year-old, “I like to bring a lot of leadership qualities,” “I want to try to help the boys in any way I can because I have a lot of experience at the level now.
Leadership, experience, and so forth. I always had a great time playing here. There are always a lot of family members here because it’s obviously quite easy for them to visit. In addition to the excellent ground, the support is consistently excellent.
I’m looking forward to playing here at home instead of away. “Help us collectively. I believe this season will be quite interesting, and I hope we can accomplish something noteworthy this year.”
Harry Darling’s choice to join Norwich might have been influenced by game time.
Even though Darling was one of the best centre defenders in the second division the previous season, Birmingham and the Blades, two teams vying for his services, already have fairly established midfield duos.
Regular minutes would not have been as certain if he had joined either of them. On the other hand, Darling will be the star player right away at Carrow Road, where the team under former manager Johannes Hoff Thorup found it difficult to prevent opponents from scoring.
