Thomas Tuchel reveals Marc Guehi private talks and shares reaction to £35m Liverpool transfer collapse
Thomas Tuchel has revealed how Marc Guehi has reacted to his failed transfer to Liverpool.
On the day of the deadline earlier this week, the center-back’s £35 million transfer to Anfield fell through. Prior to joining the Premier League winners, Guehi had a medical, but Crystal Palace abruptly cancelled at the last minute.
Guehi was forced to remain in South London as Palace was unable to sign Igor Julio, who instead went on loan to West Ham United from Brighton & Hove Albion. According to reports, Eagles head coach Oliver Glasner promised to step down if the 25-year-old was sold to Liverpool without a Premier League-experienced player taking his place. As Guehi approached the last year of his Selhurst Park contract, Palace chairman Steve Parish had already acknowledged that the team would have to trade him, albeit unwillingly.
Following his disappointment, Guehi has joined the England team for tomorrow’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Andorra. Tuchel disclosed that he had “gracefully” addressed the matter after speaking with Guehi at St George’s Park. “We had a chat with him,” England manager Tuchel stated during his pregame press conference. He looks fantastic on the pitch and is in perfect health. He has had a couple of really outstanding weeks in terms of his performance and athletic abilities.
