Thousands Raised in Memory of Dundee Boy, 13, Who Died After Lifelong Health Battle
A wave of grief and compassion has swept through Dundee following the death of 13-year-old Riley Welsh, a brave boy who touched many lives during his lifelong battle with health complications. Riley passed away earlier this week in the arms of his mother at Ninewells Hospital, leaving behind a community united in mourning and remembrance.
Riley, who had endured complex health challenges since birth, was known for his infectious smile, unshakable spirit, and the deep love he shared with his family and friends. Despite spending much of his life in and out of hospitals, he remained a beacon of joy to those around him.
His mother, Claire Welsh, described her son as “a warrior in every sense of the word.”
“He fought through so much, but he never lost that sparkle in his eyes,” she said. “Riley was my world. He was funny, cheeky, and always kind-hearted. The house feels empty without his laugh.”
News of Riley’s passing prompted an outpouring of support online, with thousands of people donating to a fundraiser set up in his memory. The campaign, launched to help the family with funeral costs and to support causes close to Riley’s heart, surpassed its original goal within hours, and has now raised over £10,000.
Organisers of the fundraiser say the donations are a testament to the impact Riley had on his community.
“Riley brought people together,” said family friend and fundraiser organiser, Megan Dawson. “Even those who had never met him were moved by his story and the strength he showed every day. This money is a reflection of how much he meant to all of us.”
Tributes have poured in from classmates, teachers, neighbours, and even strangers, many of whom shared touching memories and messages of support. A memorial page set up in his name has been filled with photos, drawings, and heartfelt notes.
Staff at Ninewells Hospital, where Riley received much of his care, also expressed their condolences. One nurse who cared for Riley said: “He was an inspiration to us all. He went through more than most of us could imagine, and yet he never gave up. It was an honour to know him.”
In honour of Riley’s memory, his school plans to hold a special assembly next week, and a community vigil is being organised at the weekend, where friends and family will gather to light candles and release balloons.
Claire Welsh said the support has brought comfort in the darkest time of her life.
“Knowing how loved Riley was is helping us cope. I miss him so much, but I’m grateful to everyone who’s keeping his memory alive,” she said.
The fundraiser remains open, with all additional funds going toward children’s health charities and local support services that helped Riley throughout his journey.
Riley’s courage and the love he inspired will not be forgotten — a young life lost far too soon, but remembered with pride and everlasting affection.
