Tom Brady influence at Birmingham City clear with new investors and transfer moves confirmed

Tom Brady has made his influence known at Birmingham City, who have confirmed a list of new investors following their defeat by Peterborough at Wembley Stadium on Sunday

Birmingham City have unveiled a raft of new investors as Tom Brady’s influence at the club becomes increasingly evident. NFL star Brady was a noteworthy appearance at Wembley Stadium on Sunday as the Blues were trounced 2-0 by Peterborough in the EFL Trophy final.

The former quarterback became a minority owner of the League One side back in August 2023 and stays involved as a chairman of the club’s advisory board.

Although the 47-year-old owns just 3.3 per cent of Birmingham and has no active day-to-day engagement with the club, his star power is evident beyond the expensive seats at Wembley.

Shelby Companies Limited (SCL), the entity through which Knighthead Capital Management owns the Blues, has revised its list of owners and several of the new names have links to Brady, as BirminghamLive reported.

One of the ways Brady does affect Birmingham is through his interest in sports science, with his ‘body coach’, Alex Guerrero, working with the players. Guerrero, who has been present at the training site on occasions this season, and his wife Alicia Guerrero have become minority shareholders in SCL.

Another investment is The Religion of Sports Media, a film-making enterprise founded by Gautam Chopra which names Brady as a shareholder.

Ameeth Sankaran, another member of the Religion of Sports Media, is also an investor.

The Religion of Sports Media, who have released films about Serena Williams, Kobe Bryant and Ben Stokes, are producing the Amazon Prime documentary about Birmingham City that was revealed last week.

Other investors include property investors Owl Holdings Limited, Paramour Capital, an investment banking advisory firm, and James DeMare, the president of global markets at Bank of America.

Birmingham’s owners have made a splash by investing north of £25million on new players and have been rewarded with promotion from League One. And co-owner Tom Wagner has promised more costly transfers this summer.

“If we have the headroom, we’ll do it,” he stated when asked whether they would shatter their transfer record this summer. “We’ll see.

I think at the end of the day, a lot of it is thinking about what do we spend this year against what we spend in future years?

“Where’s the talent? What’s the price? Where’s the value? All of those are things that can’t be answered until the window opens, but you know we do have lofty objectives and, at the same time, we will be seeking fantastic value.

I think we did an amazing job with that last summer and I think we’ll do a very good job with it this summer.”
