The latest updates from the Swansea.com Stadium. Here’s a summary of all the latest Swansea City news for Sunday, July 6.
Wrexham ‘agree deal’ for O’Brien
Wrexham have reportedly agreed to a club record fee for midfielder Lewis O’Brien. However, it is believed that the Dragons are struggling to match the Nottingham Forest player’s salary demands. Subscribe to our Swansea City newsletter here.
According to The Sun, Ryan Reynolds and co. have made a £5 million proposal for O’Brien, with Forest reportedly willing to lower their value of the player, which was previously thought to be about £8 million, in order to complete an escape.
While the signing would smash Wrexham’s transfer record, the club is apparently unable to match O’Bren’s pay demands.
As a result, according to the same article, the transfer to North Wales is now in doubt, but he is unlikely to be short on options this summer.
WalesOnline believes the Swans are still keeping an eye on developments, despite their recent signing of midfielder Ethan Galbraith, but the odds of them putting together a suitable package at this point are remote. Preston North End, Birmingham City, and Southampton have all expressed interest in the midfielder this summer, as has Spanish giants Valencia.
Hull City had already made a bid identical to the Dragons’, but their transfer embargo appears to have ended hopes of a move to Humberside.
Boss makes Galbraith claim
Richie Wellens, Leyton Orient’s manager, has disclosed that Ethan Galbraith rejected down Huddersfield Town’s offer to join Swansea City this summer.
The Northern Irishman was revealed as a Swans player on Friday evening, after previously expressing long-term interest in SA1.
He was the subject of a failed deadline day deal in January, with Orient turning down a bid for roughly £750,000. Swansea appeared to have cooled their interest earlier in the summer, but Galbraith remained in high demand, with proposals from both Huddersfield and Charlton Athletic.
Swansea, as disclosed by WalesOnline, have revived their interest in the 24-year-old, and Wellens claims a transfer to south Wales was always the first choice for the midfielder, whom he believes will make it all the way to the Premier League.
“He had a few clubs interested and I gave him the total choice of what he wanted to do,” Wellens told ESPN. “Huddersfield came in, and he didn’t want to play in League One; he wanted to test himself in the Championship.
“Charlton came in, and he didn’t want to go because he didn’t think he fit into their style of football. “Swansea came in, and he believes he fits into their style of football. He has made his decision, and we wish him the best.
He is given the opportunity to play at the level at which he is capable. I believe he’ll finish up in the Premier League.”
