Torvill & Dean say ‘we’ll never forget’ in last goodbye to Sheffield

After fifty years, Torvill and Dean bid farewell to Sheffield wednesday supporters, saying, “Tonight is one of those

special moments.”

On Saturday night, Torvill and Dean said goodbye to the Sheffield crowds, entertaining their fans with a touching

and charming retrospective of their 50 years of ice skating together.

Bolero, the gold medal winning performance at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, made Jayne Torvill and Christopher

Dean famous. They have since travelled the world as a skating duo after winning a bronze medal in 1996.

Additionally, they have participated in ITV’s Dancing on Ice since 2006, initially serving as coaches before taking on

the role as head judges in 2018.

On February 14, 2024, 40 years to the day after their Olympic victory, the couple announced their retirement. They

are currently starting their farewell tour of the United Kingdom. They reminisce about their early years and the time

they began skating together, travel through the electrifying 1980s while flipping through their favourite albums, and

then spin forward to the present with a number of contemporary takes on timeless routines.

In the middle of the show, Dean remarked, “We have had some amazing times over our career.” However, this

evening is one of those unique occasions that we will always remember. Thus, we appreciate you sharing it with us

this evening. We are truly grateful.

He concluded the performance by only stating: “Normally at this point, I would say ‘goodnight, we will see you again

soon.'” He also revealed that the dancers were skating on Sheffield steel blades, which undoubtedly caused quite a

stir from the audience. However, this is our final dance, and we would like to express our gratitude to everyone for

the memories. The audience erupted in shouts of “We love you” in response.

While the more poignant moments are reserved for Torvill and Dean, there is enough variety and action strewn

throughout the performance. Their supporting stars perform some of the livelier pieces, including a fantastic James

Bond-themed routine by young stars James Hernandez and Phebe Bekker.

Although Torvill and Dean don’t perform as well as they once did, it’s still really amazing to watch them both, who

are 67 and 66 years old, respectively, zip around the ice, dance to the music, and even accomplish some lifts and

athletic movements. Naturally, they play back all of the classic hits and provide the audience with a wealth of

information on what it was like to be the world’s top figure skater.

It is an emotional and endearing farewell. Or as one fan put it as she was walking out of the arena: “I’ve only got one

thing to say. That was f****** fantastic.”
