TRANSFER NEWS: Oldham Athletic reunited with Kane Drummond

Oldham Athletic have confirmed the return of winger Kane Drummond, with the 21-year-old signing a one-year contract that includes an option to extend for a further year. The exciting wide man rejoins the Latics after previously spending time at Boundary Park as a trialist during the 2022/23 season.

Drummond, who left Altrincham earlier this summer, impressed with his pace, creativity and eye for goal during his time in the National League last season. He made 41 appearances for the Robins, scoring eight goals and providing several assists as they finished strongly under Phil Parkinson. His performances sparked interest from clubs higher up the pyramid, but it’s Oldham who have secured his services as they continue to build for life back in the Football League.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be back here,” Drummond told the club’s media. “When I had the chance to come in a couple of years ago, I really enjoyed my time and I always felt there was unfinished business. It’s a club with big ambitions and I want to be part of that journey.”

Oldham’s recruitment strategy under manager Micky Mellon has focused on energy, youth and potential — and Drummond fits the profile perfectly. Mellon believes the young attacker can add a different dimension to his squad, particularly in the final third.

“Kane is a player we’ve tracked for a while and we’re delighted to bring him in,” said Mellon. “He’s quick, direct, and not afraid to take on defenders. He’ll give us an option out wide, but he can also operate more centrally when needed. He’s hungry to prove himself and that’s the kind of attitude we want at this football club.”

Drummond’s arrival continues an active summer for Oldham, who are preparing for their return to League Two after sealing promotion through the National League play-offs. The winger becomes the club’s third new signing of the window, following the additions of a goalkeeper and an experienced centre-back earlier this month.

The one-year deal with the option for a further season gives both the player and the club flexibility, with the potential to extend should Drummond make a strong impact. His familiarity with the club’s environment and coaching staff could also ease his transition into the squad ahead of pre-season.

Supporters have welcomed the news warmly on social media, with many recalling Drummond’s exciting performances during his brief spell with the club previously. The general sentiment is that Oldham have signed a player with genuine flair and untapped potential, capable of making the step up and becoming a key figure in their League Two campaign.

Drummond will link up with his new teammates when the Latics return to training next week. His signing represents both continuity and progress — a blend that Mellon hopes will be key to Oldham’s success in the season ahead.
