Two People in Critical Condition After Two-Car Crash on Tamworth Border

Two people have been left in critical condition following a serious two-car collision on the Tamworth border, emergency services confirmed late Sunday evening.

The crash occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, along the B5493 road near the junction with Green Lane, a rural stretch that forms part of the boundary between Staffordshire and Warwickshire. The incident involved a grey Vauxhall Astra and a blue Volkswagen Golf, both of which sustained severe front-end damage.

Emergency services, including paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene within minutes. Due to the severity of the crash, the Midlands Air Ambulance was also deployed, landing in a nearby field to assist with the urgent evacuation of the injured.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said:

“Emergency services were called to a serious collision involving two vehicles near the Tamworth border. Two individuals – one from each car – sustained critical injuries and were taken to hospital. The road was closed in both directions while collision investigators examined the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”

According to paramedics, both patients suffered multiple traumatic injuries. One was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, while the other was transported via land ambulance to University Hospital Coventry. Both are currently being treated in intensive care units.

The road was closed for several hours as police carried out forensic investigations. Local traffic was diverted through Polesworth and Warton, leading to delays for motorists traveling between Tamworth and nearby villages.

Residents in the area described hearing a loud bang followed by sirens. “It was terrifying,” said one witness who lives near the junction. “We saw smoke and then emergency vehicles rushing in. The road is narrow, and people drive way too fast around that corner.”

Initial investigations suggest that one vehicle may have crossed the central line, but police have not confirmed this pending a full analysis. Weather conditions at the time were described as dry and clear.

Local councillor Alan Richards expressed concern over repeated incidents in the area. “This stretch of road has been flagged before as a risk. We’ve had a number of near-misses and now a very serious crash. We need to review road safety measures, including signage, lighting, and speed limits,” he said.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage taken between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the area to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to call Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 432 of May 4.

The crash has sparked renewed calls from local campaigners for traffic-calming measures in rural border areas where high-speed collisions remain a recurring issue.

As of Monday morning, both victims remain in critical but stable condition. Further updates are expected as the police investigation continues and medical teams monitor their progress.
