“Under the radar”: After spending £300 million, the most recent Brighton to Chelsea deal will be the “best yet.”
Former Scotland international Don Hiutchinson says Chelsea’s acquisition of Joao Pedro from Brighton is their best move to date.
Pedro, 23, completed a £60 million transfer from the Seagulls and signed to a seven-year contract with the Blues. Chelsea has a history of acquiring Brighton players, and in recent transfer windows, they have paid the Seagulls about £300 million in exchange for players like Pedro, Rob Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, and Moises Caicedo, who all left the Amex Stadium for Stamford Bridge. The Brazilian international scored twice in the team’s victory over former Brazilian club Fluminense in the Club World Cup semi-final, giving Enzo Maresca’s squad a strong start.

Pedro and Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt) are, in my opinion, the two best players who have nearly gone unnoticed this summer.
Pedro is one of the players I would have been considering if I were a Premier League team, even if everyone is aware of Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, and Dusan Vlahovic. Chelsea deserves praise for obtaining one of them. Hutchinson also believes Nicolas Jackson, the current Blues front-runner, may have issues as a result of Pedro’s arrival.
“That leaves a dilemma now for Nicolas Jackson, who acts like he wants to fight the world, because with Delap and Joao Pedro, there are three players for one No. 9 spot,” said Hutchinson.
Chelsea have done really good business so far, but I stand by the idea they need to add more experience. If they keep on with the current strategy, it can only take them so far. It’s older players who will get them over the line, and they need to address that.”
Pedro, who paid £30 million to join Brighton from Watford in 2023, was thrilled with his two goals on his debut for the new team. “I believe that it was a dream,” the 23-year-old said to DAZN. With two goals, I don’t think it could have been better. We must now consider the final. “I’m glad to have scored my first goal for Chelsea, but I also understand how crucial this tournament is for Fluminense.”
“I can simply apologise, but I have to act professionally. My team is Chelsea. I get paid to score goals, therefore I was pleased to do so today. I believe the final will be a crucial game, so I need to rest and concentrate on it now. When Chelsea plays Paris St. Germain in the Club World final at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Pedro will be hoping to build on his strong start.
