UPDATE: Wakefield Tragedy—Mother and 8-Year-Old Son Found Deceased; 4-Year-Old Daughter Found Alive

WAKEFIELD, Bronx — A quiet corner of Wakefield was shaken on Friday night, April 18, 2025, when police discovered a harrowing scene inside an apartment building at 683 East 231st Street, between Carpenter Avenue and White Plains Road. A 38-year-old woman and her 8-year-old son were found deceased inside their home, while a 4-year-old girl, believed to be the woman’s daughter, was found alive but alone.

According to authorities, officers from the NYPD’s 47th Precinct responded to a 911 wellness check around 10:25 p.m., after concerns were raised by relatives who had been unable to reach the family. Upon entering the residence, officers made the grim discovery: the lifeless bodies of the mother and son, and the young girl in need of care.

Emergency Medical Services pronounced the woman and her son dead at the scene. The identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released, pending family notification. The 4-year-old girl, who was found unharmed but shaken, was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. She is now in the custody of child welfare services.

Police officials have not disclosed the cause of death for the woman or the child but have confirmed that there were no signs of forced entry into the apartment. The NYPD’s Crime Scene Unit spent several hours on site throughout the night and early morning hours, collecting evidence and speaking with neighbors.

Residents of the building and nearby neighbors expressed shock and heartbreak at the news.

“I’ve lived here for over 20 years,” said one neighbor who declined to give her name. “You never expect something like this to happen so close to home. That poor little girl… I can’t imagine what she went through.”

The building, a multi-family walk-up, has not been previously known for incidents of violent crime. Police are interviewing residents and reviewing security footage from nearby buildings as part of their ongoing investigation.

Detectives have not ruled out any possibilities, including murder-suicide or a medical emergency. The city’s Medical Examiner is expected to conduct autopsies to determine the exact causes of death.

Community leaders in the Wakefield area are urging calm and patience as authorities continue their investigation. Local officials and clergy have also offered their support to the family and the community at large.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson released a brief statement on Saturday morning expressing condolences and promising support: “This tragedy cuts deep for our Bronx community. My heart is with the loved ones of the victims, and I will ensure that the surviving child receives the care and protection she needs.”

As the investigation continues, residents have begun organizing a small vigil in memory of the mother and son, with candles and flowers appearing near the building entrance by Saturday evening.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or via their website.
