Urgent fraud warning from North Yorkshire Police after victim loses thousands of pounds

Police in North Yorkshire have issued a warning after a person lost thousands of pounds to scammers posing as

police officials.

A North Yorkshire person lost thousands of pounds after falling for a phone scam in which a scammer posing as a

“police courier” demanded money from them while posing as a police officer.

The suspects in this case claimed to have discovered bank cards in a business and persuaded the victim that they

were investigating counterfeit money and that they should take out a sizable sum of cash, place it in a bag, and have

someone pick it up.

They instructed the victim to contact 999 to confirm their identity, but the suspects remained online, leading the

victim to believe they were speaking with the police.

“Please do not give any money or give your bank details to anyone who calls on the phone or at your home,” North

Yorkshire Police have urged.

“You would never be asked for money by the cops.

“The police would never ask for your bank details in these circumstances.

“Criminals are experts at impersonating banks, trusted organisations or the police. They will try to rush and panic

you into responding to their requests. It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore these requests

“You can call us back to confirm an officer if you’re contacted unexpectedly, but please make sure the criminals are

off the line.” Wait at least five minutes before calling, hang up and if at all possible, use a different line or phone.

Asking a friend, neighbour, or family member for assistance is another option.

“Call us at 101 if you have been the target of such scammers.

“Call us at 999 and don’t answer the door if someone you don’t trust is calling your house.”
