Middlesbrough are keen on Blackburn Rovers right-back Callum Brittain this summer.
Valerien Ismael is hopeful Blackburn Rovers already have a replacement for Callum Brittain, with the Frenchmen resigned to losing the Middlesbrough target this summer.
Brittain has interest from a number of Championship clubs, but it’s understood that he’s keen to explore a move to Boro. He wasn’t involved in a Blackburn friendly at the weekend, with Ismael stating that the attack-minded right-back had refused to play and made clear his desire to leave the club this summer.
With Brittain out of contract in 12 months, Blackburn are now resigned to losing the 27-year-old. Boro are the favourites to win the race, with talks ongoing between the two clubs to try and come to an agreement on the fee for the transfer. As for Blackburn’s plans, Ismael believes summer signing Ryan Alebiosu may already be his replacement.
Ismael told the Lancashire Telegraph: “We have already got a right-back, we’ve signed one already, so we are not in a rush at the minute. We are in a very good position. At least we have a player who is able to show some really good quality. He’s a very promising player.
“Ryan is exactly the profile we need. He’s tall, he’s very, very fast. He’s an attacking full-back. With all the potential we see in him, we know that we have to work with him. That is my job. This is what Blackburn Rovers is about, giving chances to young, promising players. We believe if we are able to get through the pre-season with him, we will enjoy the way he plays.”
On Blackburn’s general transfer plans as Brittain prepares to depart, Ismael continues: “I think you see clearly now on the transfer market, we are in the transition. We spoke after the last game in the season, we wanted to keep that stability in the squad to try to extend the players.
“We made offers but they chose another way. So now, our strategy is to go into the transition. We didn’t expect to have that this summer but now it’s time.”
As well as Brittain, Boro are trying to progress a deal with Hull City for centre-back Alfie Jones, while they’ve also held talks with Danny Ings over a potential free transfer. They’re progressing other deals on a number of fronts right now, but are also staying open-minded and flexible in the early stages of pre-season as Rob Edwards assesses his options.
