Wanderers target Kenny wants new deal at Celtic before deciding loan future

WANDERERS target Johnny Kenny has expressed his wish to sign a new contract with Celtic.

The Irish striker appears to have stopped talks about accepting a permanent deal abroad after disclosing that manager Brendan Rodgers wants to sign him to a new contract at Parkhead.

Reports in Scotland have increased the likelihood of a permanent move to Bolton, with a £500,000 proposal rejected last month and a £1 million price tag demanded.

However, it is understood that a loan deal is much more likely, and once Kenny’s contractual status is resolved, the 22-year-old will have the option of joining one of several Championship or League One clubs.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner on his future with Celtic, he stated, “I’d want to sign a new deal with this club.

“Ultimately, it’s the club I want to play for. Since I returned in January. “The manager has been quite helpful to me. Obviously, he wants me to sign a new contract, which is very promising for me at this club. I am pleased to sign a new deal.

“The manager will decide on that (another loan move).” Wherever I am, I want to play football.

“I want to grow as an individual, and I believe that playing games will help me do so. I want to try to break into the national squad, and I believe that playing games will help me get there.

“I believe the manager will have a plan for me, and I doubt he will keep me here without playing me.

“So whatever the manager decides, I’m completely behind him because everything he’s told me since January has been 100% accurate, so I believe in the manager.”

“I came in, learnt my trade over the last few months, and mastered the system in and out of possession. I feel like I’m ready to get started now, and hopefully I’ll receive the opportunity to do so.

“My goal is to represent this team on a daily basis. There are so many games at this club, and I’m hoping to break in and receive opportunities since that’s all I want to accomplish.

“It’s such a big club and I want to be part of it.”

Steven Schumacher has announced that he wants two additional strikers this summer, but with Sam Dalby expected to miss the start of the season due to a hamstring injury, the club will have to speed up their recruitment process.
