Wantage: Police Update After 4 Arrests in ‘Stabbing and Fight’
Police have issued an update following a violent incident in Wantage last week that left one person injured and led to the arrest of four individuals.
The disturbance, which took place on Wednesday evening (April 28), occurred near the town centre, sparking a swift emergency response. Officers and paramedics were called to reports of a fight involving several people, during which a man in his 20s suffered stab wounds. He was quickly taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
Thames Valley Police confirmed today that four people have been arrested in connection with the incident. The suspects, aged between 17 and 24, were detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. They have since been released on bail while investigations continue.
In a statement released this morning, Detective Inspector James Holden from Thames Valley Police said:
*”We understand that this incident will have caused considerable concern among residents. We would like to reassure the public that we are conducting a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened and to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”*
He added: *”We believe this was an isolated incident involving individuals known to each other. There is no wider threat to the public. However, visible patrols will continue in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance to the community.”*
Police have appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Wallingford Street or the Market Place between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm on the evening of the attack.
A section of Wallingford Street was cordoned off for several hours following the altercation as forensic teams carried out detailed investigations. The cordon was lifted on Thursday morning, but local businesses and residents expressed shock at the heavy police presence in their normally quiet town.
One shop owner, who asked not to be named, said: *”We were closing up when we saw flashing lights and officers everywhere. It’s frightening, especially for a town like Wantage where serious crime is rare.”*
Another resident commented: *”It’s worrying to hear about stabbings happening here. I hope the police get to the bottom of it quickly.”*
As part of their investigation, officers are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area and conducting house-to-house enquiries. They have urged anyone with doorbell cameras or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident to check their recordings and come forward if they spot anything unusual.
DI Holden concluded: *”The support of the public is crucial in helping us piece together the full circumstances of what happened. If you have any information, no matter how small it might seem, please contact Thames Valley Police or Crimestoppers anonymously.”*
Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting reference number 43240184567. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police have not yet confirmed when the suspects will return to answer bail but said updates would be provided in due course as the investigation develops.
