WATCH: Portsmouth man arrested after punching police officer and attacking JD Sport worker.

A man was arrested following an incident on Commercial Road.

During the incident at JD Sport on Commercial Road shortly after 9 a.m. today, a police officer used pepper spray on the man before bundling him to the ground.
According to the force, an officer dispatched to the sports shop was punched by the man while attempting to arrest him. A crowd gathered to watch the drama unfold as the man struggled on the floor.
A police spokesperson said: “Just after 9 a.m. this morning, May 1, an officer on Commercial Road was summoned to the JD Sports store after a man assaulted a member of staff when asked to leave. The man then assaulted the police officer with a punch. A 34-year-old man from Portsmouth was then arrested on suspicion of common assault and assaulting an emergency worker. “He is still in custody at this time.”
