Watford reporter discusses Cleverley sacking on talkSPORT.
The Watford Observer’s Hornets correspondent was on national radio last night, as the wait for the next head coach at Vicarage Road continues.
On talkSPORT’s EFL All Access show, Hugh Woozencroft asked Andrew French about Tom Cleverley’s sacking, Gino Pozzo’s statement, and who the owner will appoint as the next manager.
“This one was more of a surprise because of who it was,” Andrew said about the decision to fire Cleverley after Watford finished 14th in the Championship.
“It’s not surprising given Watford’s poor performance in the second half of the season, but this is the first time the Pozzos have hired a head coach with a connection to the club.” So that bond has now been broken, and it appears that we will return to the more Pozzo-like format of a coach who may not be as well-known and has never coached in England.
Pozzo issued a statement 24 hours after sacking Cleverley, which was “very welcome” given the owner’s infrequent public communication.
Andrew went on to say: “He mentions that Tom was inexperienced but a year ago when he appointed him Tom was a year less experienced than he is now, so that sort of line doesn’t really hold up.”
Andrew joked that there had been “more flip flops than on Brighton beach” in the bookmakers’ markets, but pointed out that a new appointment had not been made quickly.
“Either they really are digging into details, or there’s some kind of work permit issue or they want to have a little bit of clear water between one going and one arriving which would be a step in the right direction,” according to him.
“If Watford and Pozzo are going to do things differently then you need to show that in your actions and your deeds rather than talking about it.”
