‘We are confident, but cautious’ – Alex Neil outlines season expectations ahead of Millwall season opener.

ALEX Neil discussed his plans for the upcoming season ahead of Millwall’s season opener at Norwich City on Saturday, August 9.
The Lions finished their pre-season friendly schedule strongly, defeating Portuguese top-flight side Estoril Praia 3-0 at The Den on Saturday, August 2. Millwall has added six players to the squad that finished two points behind the top six last season, including Josh Coburn and Zak Sturge, both of whom were previously on loan at The Den.
The Lions’ late play-off surge was fuelled by a run of five wins in six games, before losing 3-1 away to Burnley on the last day.
“I think if you look at us right now, we appear to be in a very good place. So I believe there is a lot of optimism and confidence.
However, as I am well aware, that can quickly come back to bite you in this game. So we’re confident, but cautious as always when you’re the manager.” Neil took over as Lions manager on December 30, 2024, and after a slow start, Millwall was on fire as the season came to a close.
Between March 8 and April 26, the Lions scored the second most points, trailing Burnley.
When asked if he feels stronger going into the season after his first full pre-season with his squad, Neil said, “I feel stronger because I believe the players and I have a really good understanding of where we are and what we’re trying to become and evolve as a team.” “I believe there has been a significant improvement in the team; watching us play now, I believe we have been very good in possession and out of possession.
We just talked about the number of goals we’re scoring, which has always been a big issue for the team, especially in recent years. So, if we can address that, I believe we have a very good chance.”
