“We need to” – Huddersfield Town urged to take Matty Pearson action
Huddersfield Town’s return to League One has been incredibly disappointing; they have failed to contend for
automatic promotion and could end up spending a second straight season in the third division as their hopes of
qualifying for the playoffs continue to wane.
After Michael Duff was fired, Town has struggled to get going under temporary manager Jonathan Worthington.
Worthington defeated Crawley Town 5-1 at home in his first game as manager, but losses to Charlton Athletic and
Lincoln City have left Huddersfield in eighth place, two points behind sixth-place Bolton Wanderers, and in generally
bad form after losing four of their last five games.
In an attempt to preserve their dwindling hopes of returning to the Championship at the first opportunity,
Huddersfield have apparently changed their minds and are now considering players like Paul Warne and Brian
Barry-Murphy as permanent successors to Duff before the season ends, even though they originally gave
Worthington the position until the end of the season.
promotion bid could just dictate Matthew Pearson’s future with the club as he approaches the end of his current
contract.
Matthew Pearson will remain a member of Huddersfield Town’s team for the upcoming campaign.
Pearson, who joined from Luton Town in the summer of 2021 and has made just under 130 appearances in four
years, will see his contract expire at the end of the current campaign.
This season, the 31-year-old defender has made 22 League One appearances and scored five goals, giving Town a
reliable outlet thanks to his aerial danger. Although the Terriers supporters enjoy him, he might have to make do
with a smaller position in the team the following game.

FLW asked Graeme Rayner, one of our Town fan pundits, if he thought the Terriers’ backline needed a change or if
Pearson should be given a new contract.
If the team stays in League One, Graeme thinks a new contract should be in order, but he also thinks Pearson should
be moved back into the squad rather than continuing to be a regular starter.
“I would say he has served the club very, very well, if we are in League One next season he may be worth offering a
new deal to keep some degree of continuity,” Graeme stated to FLW.
Among the few players who never appear to down tools is him.
“But what I would say is that I would expect, if we are in League One and he is still here, that he would be more of a
squad player instead of a guaranteed starter.
“We need to bring in someone else to be playing in that role as a first-choice, so I think he would be a squad player if
we keep him.
In preparation for what appears to be an exciting end-of-season run-in, Huddersfield will be eager to bounce back
from two straight losses and get back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon when they host mid-table Mansfield
Town. Although they may have their work cut out for them next week against third-place Wycombe Wanderers, they
could end up playing the Chairboys in the playoffs, so they will be keen to make a statement.
Following Wycombe’s visit, Huddersfield will play Cambridge United and Burton Albion, two teams currently in the
bottom four, in games that should result in a maximum number of points.
Before finishing the regular season against Exeter City and Leyton Orient, a direct contender for the last up-for-grabs
play-off berth, it’s a tough trip to fifth-place Stockport County, who are virtually certain to finish inside the top six.
“Whether he would want to stay on that basis I don’t know, but he’s been one of the few players who seems to have
played with the right attitude most consistently.”
