West Brom managerial search latest as QPR claim made amid link to Bundesliga coach.
West Brom’s search for Tony Mowbray’s successor is in its second week, and a familiar Championship name has entered the picture.
Mowbray’s Bank Holiday Albion’s sacking on Monday came after they had lost five of their last six games, dropping them out of the play-off race and into tenth.
It was a disastrous end to the season for the club, and the owners had had enough of Mowbray’s second coming, which ended abruptly after only three months.
Immediately, names were linked to the vacant position, with Albion believed to be looking for a young coach to succeed Mowbray at The Hawthorns.
It had also been stated that Albion was not in a hurry to appoint a successor and would take their time to get it right.
However, following initial connections to out-of-work managers, a Championship name appears to have entered the picture.
The Express & Star reported last week that QPR manager Marti Cifuentes, who has reportedly fallen out with the board at Loftus Road, may have been interested in vacancies at Albion and Norwich City.
He also fits the profile of what Albion are looking for, and on Sunday, it was reported that a representative of the Spaniard had spoken with another representative of the Spaniard.
The QPR manager joined the club in October 2023, steering it away from relegation after previously managing Swedish club Hammarby.
If Albion goes ahead with a possible deal, they will most likely have to compensate the Rs, who signed the Spaniard to a long-term contract in September 2024.
In addition, German coach Alexander Blessin is reportedly attracting interest from Albion.
The 51-year-old is another candidate who fits Albion’s requirements. He is currently in charge of Bundesliga club St Pauli, which was promoted to the German top flight for only the second time last season.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler took them up before Blessin took over, and he has led them to an impressive season, with the club six points clear of the relegation zone with three games remaining.
