James Morrison’s impact at West Brom

Since James Morrison arrived at West Brom, he would remain at The Hawthorns all the way up until his retirement

would only make 11 appearances that season and play a bit-part role.

From the second promotion, Albion would undergo their eight-year stint in the top-flight, and Morrison regularly

exceeded 30 Premier League appearances per season, while his most productive campaigns came in 2012 and 2013,

as he scored five goals and recorded five assists in both terms.

The midfielder would later be missed by the Baggies as they were relegated in 2018 due to an Achilles tendon injury

that left them without the experience necessary to escape their predicament.

Before hanging up his boots following the Baggies’ semi-final loss to Aston Villa on penalties, the now 39-year-old

played 19 times for the team the following season in the Championship, helping them earn a play-off spot.

Morrison finished with 39 goals and 34 assists from 341 appearances while wearing an Albion shirt, a fantastic total

that well outweighs the return on such a little outlay.

Brom’s greatest ever steals at under £1.5 million.

The Black Country team couldn’t have asked for a more impactful player at such a low price, and after winning two

promotions and establishing themselves as a dependable alternative at the Premier League level, it is hard to see how

the team will pull off such a fantastic bargain again in the future.

For Middlesbrough, they will look back on sanctioning that deal with deep regret. Morrison was beginning to display

his skills while playing at Riverside Stadium at the age of 21. Had he been given more time to advance, he could have

had a greater influence on their Premier League adventure and possibly saved them from relegation to the second

division in the 2008–09 campaign.

With Morrison wearing a West Brom shirt and the club receiving years of devotion, quality, and dedication as a

result of Boro’s error, the Baggies won’t be very sympathetic.

Albion would undoubtedly seek to duplicate a purchase of this calibre in order to fulfil their Premier League

aspirations once more, but it will be difficult, especially in such a crowded modern market.
