According to GiveMeSport, West Brom are likely to sign Montreal defender George Campbell on a permanent deal.
West Brom are beginning a new era as they open their first transfer window under Ryan Mason’s guidance. The former Tottenham Hotspur coach has taken over at The Hawthorns as Tony Mowbray’s permanent successor.
The Baggies are hoping to return to the Championship’s top six after narrowly missing out last season, but Mason will need help to launch a meaningful challenge. There have been some encouraging early signs, with Nat Phillips and Aune Heggebo already confirmed as new additions.
West Brom appear to be on the verge of making a third summer signing. According to GiveMeSport, WBA is closing a deal to recruit US defender George Campbell from MLS club Montreal.
Campbell has attracted interest from a number of clubs this summer, but the Baggies appear to have won the race. Bristol City, West Brom’s Championship rivals, were reported to be interested last month.
No fee has been disclosed as of yet, but it is understood that Montreal was hoping for roughly £1 million for the defender. Campbell’s contract expires at the end of 2025, but Montreal has the option to extend it for another year, though they will most likely want to cash in sooner.
Since joining Montréal, he has established himself as an important player, appearing in 71 appearances across all competitions. His impressive efforts earned him a debut for the USMNT in January, but he was not included in the following camp due to a recent return from a hamstring injury. WBA – West Brom.
Campbell, a right-footed defender, has exceptional quickness and a commanding physical presence, which suggest he could thrive in the Championship.
Quality over quantity
West Brom’s early business this window bodes well for the Baggies. Campbell is only their third signing, but he is another valuable asset.
The Baggies are adding some high-quality depth to their team. Last season, Burnley and Leeds United relied heavily on such depth to secure automatic promotion.
WBA’s ultimate goal is to be promoted next season, even if it means going through the play-offs. If they continue in this business, they will be in a good position to do so.
