After a disappointing finish to the 2024–25 season, West Brom is still searching for Tony Mowbray’s replacement.
After barely three months in command, the former Sunderland manager left The Hawthorns after the Baggies lost five of their six league games, putting them out of the running for the playoffs.
James Morrison was then placed in temporary care, managing their season-ending games against Luton Town and Cardiff City.
Due to the setback, Albion will spend their fifth consecutive season in the second division. Owner Shilen Patel will decide on the next head coach as the Baggies aim to return to the major leagues.
The two candidates who are definitely in the running are Eric Ramsay, manager of Minnesota United, and Ryan Mason, coach of Tottenham Hotspur.
Two young coaches in their 30s appear to be the type of person Bilkul Football Group is seeking to run the team in the long run, and a West Brom supporter for FLW has made his opinion known about who the Black Country team should hire.
West Brom advised to pursue Eric Ramsay over Ryan Mason for head coach vacancy
West Brom supporter Callum Burgess said in an interview with Football League World that he would prefer Eric Ramsay over Ryan Mason as manager of the Baggies, pointing to Ramsay’s prior MLS experience as a key consideration.
“I think I’d probably go for the man who’s managed a team before and seems to be doing a decent job at Minnesota United if it were a straight choice between Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay,” Burgess stated.
“Ramsay, who has previously served as a coach at Chelsea and Manchester United, appears to be succeeding in his first managerial position in America.
“I believe he would be a wise choice if Albion can get him to join us. He wouldn’t be the typical West Brom appointment you would anticipate.
“It’s a somewhat surprising decision to choose between two young managers, but Ramsay would be a good pick and better than Albion supporters had anticipated given his performance at Minnesota, where he has over a 50% win percentage and is third in the MLS.
“Some of us were expecting another journeyman route, but it clearly doesn’t seem to be the case.”
West Brom could be in safer hands with Eric Ramsey, but an appointment looks unlikely
Given his prior managerial expertise, Eric Ramsay appears to be the more desirable of the two possibilities.
In the meanwhile, Ryan Mason has not yet experienced a full-time position, and it appears that the Baggies are taking a significant risk by hiring someone with such a lack of experience when the supporters’ expectations would be quite high.
From the standpoint of West Brom supporters, Ramsay would be a better fit, but it seems the 33-year-old isn’t getting ready for life outside of the US.
The Express & Star claims that Ramsay is still committed to Minnesota and will stay there for the foreseeable future, suggesting that the Baggies will make a serious effort to sign Ryan Mason.
It is still unclear who will be in the dugout for the first game of the new season, and whomever accepts the position will be under tremendous pressure to succeed at The Hawthorns.
