What happens to the Premier League’s Conference League spot after Crystal Palace won the FA Cup?

Crystal Palace not only won their first major trophy, the FA Cup, but also secured a spot in Europe.

The Eagles ended their 120-year major title drought with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday.

However, part of their celebration will include thinking about the future, now that they know they will be playing on the continent.

Winning the FA Cup automatically qualifies teams for the Europa League league phase, including Palace.

This also affects other Premier League teams vying for Europe. Here’s a breakdown.

Premier League European Permutations

Crystal Palace secured a spot in the Europa League.

However, the victory at Wembley has reduced the chances of eighth place in the Premier League qualifying for Europe.

Sixth place in the top-flight will place English teams in UEFA’s second-tier competition alongside Palace.

Ironically, that would be Manchester City.

If City had won the FA Cup over Palace, finishing eighth would have secured a spot in the Europa Conference League.

If Pep Guardiola’s team finished in the top six, the seventh-placed team would have been promoted to the Europa League, followed by the eighth-placed team in the Conference League.

However, the current situation suggests that seventh place will likely be enough to qualify for the European third tier.
