The foundations are in place; Jay Stansfield, Tomoki Iwata, and Christophe Klarer were game changers for the Blues last summer, and, while the business isn’t expected to be as large as last year’s, Craig Gardner still has work to do.
The Blues will not return to the Championship with the intention of looking over their shoulders all season.
Only six signings have been announced across the division, with three loan deals becoming permanent (Jacob Wright to Norwich, Gustavo Puerto to Hull, and Alfons Sampsted to Blues). The other three are free agents, with Hector Kyprianou moving to Watford and Daniel Iversen and Jordan Thompson joining Preston. Iversen’s deal is thought to have been finalised for several months.
In other words, it’s quiet. The window does not officially open until Sunday, June 1. It will close again on Tuesday, June 10 due to the Club World Cup, and then reopen on Monday, June 16 until the deadline on Monday, September 1.
It is expected to get a little bit more lively next week—Blues will be working hard behind the scenes at their Henley-in-Arden base – but do not expect an avalanche of deals across the division before players start returning for pre-season training towards the end of the month.

Last year, when the window opened on June 14, there were nine confirmed deals in the Championship waiting to be officially processed – but there were only 21 more by the beginning of July.
90% of all Championship signings were announced after July 1. In fact, 50 percent of deals were completed after August 1, nearly 40 percent after the season’s first game on August 10, and 25 percent in the final two days of the window.
For context, the Blues, who signed 17 players last summer, did not sign their first player, Ryan Allsop from Hull City, until June 18. They then signed Burnley’s Bailey Peacock-Farrell 12 days later. July and August were especially fruitful, with the Blues signing six and nine players, respectively.
Phil Parkinson, preparing for Blues’ fellow promoted side Wrexham’s return to this level for the first time in 43 years, probably has more work to do than most but he has been preaching patience.
He told the Wrexham Leader: “I know the fans will be excited about some signings and such, but as we have in the past, we have always tried to be patient and bring in players we believe are right for the club.
“What I’ve noticed over the last three years is that on the Tuesday following the bank holiday, the phone calls just go to a different level.” Everyone has been waiting for the play-offs to end; the Premier League ended that weekend, and the recruitment level has increased to some extent.
“As we always do at this point in the season, we have some preliminary meetings with players and agents, but it is still very early in the summer. We are constantly communicating with clubs, but this is an ongoing process.”
