In the event that wages are not paid, Sheffield Wednesday’s players will have only a few weeks left to give notice to end their Owls contracts.
Ten days have passed since Wednesday’s players, coaches, and non-football employees were supposed to receive their May salaries; however, as of this morning, many are still not paid at all, and the club is still subject to an embargo imposed by the English Football League due to “Regulation 54.1-Non-payment to Players.”
The EFL has also charged the club and Dejphon Chansiri, and both parties have 14 days until June 3rd to react. The league can impose penalties ranging from fines and point deductions to expulsion and membership suspension. Although it hasn’t been verified, it’s also possible that the club violated the 30-day regulation and is currently subject to a three-window transfer fee limit.
Unpaid wages for Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls’ current situation is not promising, but it might still get worse. According to Article 14bis of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, even players with long-term contracts at Hillsborough could leave for free in about five weeks if they haven’t been paid by the next pay cheque, which is in three weeks.
According to the applicable regulation, “If a club illegally fails to pay a player at least two monthly salaries on their due dates, the player will be deemed to have a just cause to terminate his contract, provided that he has declared the debtor club in default in writing and given the debtor club at least 15 days to fully comply with its financial obligation(s).” Other clauses in contracts that were in place when this clause went into effect might be taken into account.
Since Wednesday’s employees and players are typically paid on the last day of the month, their next payment is probably scheduled for June 30. According to the aforementioned rules, if that date passes without payment and the outstanding balance is still unpaid, players will have 15 days to notify the club of their intention to leave. Regardless of how long is left on their contract, they will be free to rip them up if payments aren’t collected inside that 15 days.
It is not the first time this scenario has come up on Wednesday; in 2021, for example, players took action over unpaid salaries; nevertheless, the numbers were finally settled, and no one departed when it happened.
