Which Chelsea player alongside Mason Mount that QPR’s Harvey Vale built bond with – it might surprise you

You might be surprised to learn which Chelsea player, in addition to Mason Mount, Harvey Vale of QPR bonded with.

The 21-year-old showed great promise when he arrived from Chelsea, but he was immediately sidelined because of a lower back bone stress injury. Knowing that Vale, who had a little role in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League-winning campaign, would be worth the wait once his injuries were healed, QPR proceeded with the purchase in spite of this.

In a brief catch-up, the R’s discuss Vale’s international youth career, his time at Chelsea, his loan stints at Hull City and Bristol Rovers, and his adjustment to Loftus Road thus far. This is Vale’s first permanent move away from Stamford Bridge in his career.

Mason Mount, a current Manchester United midfielder who rose through the academy to the first team at his previous club, was unsurprisingly named by Vale as someone he would learn from at Chelsea. However, he also mentioned German forward Kai Havertz as someone else he learned from while at the Blues.

When Harvey Vale, then 17 years old, got his first professional contract in September 2020, he was excited to pick some tips from the Chelsea team’s other professionals.

In an interview with QPR’s media team, Vale named a few people who taught him the most as he progressed through the Chelsea ranks.

“I’d say at the time there were a few players I’d really go to and ask questions,” he stated. “People admire the young Chelsea boy in my position, Mason Mount. We had a good relationship.

Adding, “As well as Kai Havertz,” “I got a bit of a bond with him, and they were very open to take us under their wings.”

Although Vale can play left back or anywhere in the midfield, he has a natural ability to attack and participate in creative play, so it seems logical that the current QPR player would seek guidance from the senior squad’s forwards.

Though a fellow Englishman with Chelsea’s development system experience, like Mount, would be a fitting mentor for Vale, few would have predicted that Kai Havertz, who had only recently joined Chelsea in 2020, would take the talented young player under his wing.

QPR will be hoping Harvey Vale can bring some of what he learnt from Kai Havertz to Loftus Road whenever he’s fit to play. After all, learning from someone with more than 50 German caps, more than 40 Premier League goals, and a Champions League final victory can’t be a bad thing.

Due to injury and a lack of opportunities at Chelsea, the 21-year-old hasn’t played as much as he would have liked this past season. However, during the 2023–24 League One season, while on loan at Bristol Rovers, he demonstrated his versatility at such a young age.

When Vale was on loan at Hull City in the 2022–2023 season, a groin injury prevented him from having a serious chance at the Championship. He and QPR supporters will both be hoping that the next season is the one in which he establishes himself as a major player in the second division.
