Why Nahki Wells was ‘stabbed in the heart’ by Bristol City during exit, a ‘certain individual
Nahki Wells’ decision to leave Bristol City after more than five years there devastated the team’s supporters, and he
has now opened out about his tearful exit.
Bristol City is going through a transformation this summer after losing badly to Sheffield United in the play-off semi-
final to end the Championship campaign.
Liam Manning was hired by Norwich City this summer, and Gerhard Struber, a former Barnsley manager, was
brought in by the Robins to replace Manning.
Emil Riis Jakobsen left Preston North End for Bristol City earlier this summer. Joe Lumley joined from
Southampton, and Adam Randell came from Plymouth Argyle to Bristol City.
The painful departure of veteran Nahki Wells, who has now revealed his questionable Robins departure, has clouded
the atmosphere at Ashton Gate this summer despite those encouraging additions.
Nahki Wells comments on Bristol City exit after Gerhard Struber’s appointment
After five and a half years at Bristol City, Wells was expected to depart this summer, according to an earlier window
EFL Analysis.
On social media, Bristol City supporters expressed their sadness over Wells’ departure, with many saying they were
“gutted” about the veteran forward’s departure.
Wells, 35, joined League One team Luton Town this summer after leaving the Robins after making 237 appearances,
tallying 48 goals and 19 assists.
The Bermuda international has opened up about his “upsetting exit,” which has left Wells and the Robins supporters
still in shock.
“It was like being stabbed in the heart to not have been given the chance to stay at the club, in any way,” Wells said to
Bristol’s One Stream.
“I was informed that a specific person at the football club would make me an offer, after which I would not hear from
them for six weeks.
“A new manager took over after the previous one left.
“I get the phone as soon as he’s introduced, saying that he and they wish to take a different route and that I’m not
needed.
It was assumed that I didn’t receive the desired length of my contract. I didn’t receive the pay I had hoped for or
desired.
“I just had no choice but to leave the football club. In that regard, I had a really distressing summer.
Struber and new center-forward Jakobsen now have the responsibility of defending Bristol City’s choice to allow
Wells to depart.
Gerhard Struber must prove that Bristol City made right call with Nahki Wells

after six seasons of service.
The need to increase the number of goal scorers was Bristol City’s main issue during the summer transfer window,
and Wells’ departure made it even more crucial.
Earlier in the season, Jakobsen caught Sunderland’s attention thanks to his stellar Preston campaign, where he
finished with 12 goals and two assists from 45 league games.
| Key statistic | Nahki Wells in 24/25 | Emil Riis Jakobsen in 24/25 |
| Games played | 39 | 45 |
| Goals | 10 | 12 |
| Assists | 4 | 2 |
| Shots on target | 26 | 30 |
Wells, who cost £5 million to join from Burnley in the 2020 midseason window, became a Robins legend thanks to
his goal-scoring prowess and unselfish demeanour.
Jakobsen will have a lot to live up to in the eyes of Bristol City supporters by taking over Wells’ role, and it is even
more crucial that the Dane start strong because the upcoming season might be the greatest Championship yet.
Wells hinted that Struber and Bristol City manager Brian Tinnion were the ones who allowed him to leave, so it
remains to be seen if the Robins made the right choice.
