Why Nottingham Forest lead the race for Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz

According to Italian reports, Juventus and former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has had a difficult time in Turin since his high-profile summer transfer move, and Premier League team Nottingham Forest is currently the front-runner to sign him.

In a €50 million deal last summer, the Brazil international—who was awarded Aston Villa’s Player of the Season in 2022–2023—joined Juventus, while Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea made separate but opposing moves.

Under both Thiago Motta and his successor Igor Tudor, Douglas Luiz has had difficulty breaking into the Juventus lineup despite being one of the most costly and well-known summer additions to Serie A.

Due to intermittent muscular problems, the 26-year-old has only made 16 appearances in Serie A this season, only three of which have been as a starter. This season, Douglas Luiz has appeared in fewer than 800 minutes across all competitions. His final season with Aston Villa had seen him play 4,353 minutes.

In a recent online exchange, Douglas Luiz expressed his frustrations by pointing out that, despite his injuries this season, he has also had to sit on the bench while healthy.

“Why hasn’t a signing like me played two consecutive matches with this shirt?” he asked. Throughout the year, reports in Italy have connected Douglas Luiz with a return to the Premier League.

There had been a number of rumors during the January transfer window, including a return to one of his former clubs, Manchester City, but Nottingham Forest has also been predicted to be the front-runner to sign him.

According to tuttosport, Forest fulfills two essential requirements in the Douglas Luiz hunt.

First of all, since sporting director Edu Gaspar has already gotten in touch with the Bianconeri, they can meet Juventus’ requests to sell the Brazilian. Financially, qualifying for the Champions League will also benefit Forest.

Second, according to Wednesday’s rumor, Douglas Luiz is interested in the Forest project, which is on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League.
