Wigan Athletic man announces exit amid Bolton Wanderers links

Last summer, Wigan Athletic hired the veteran as both a player and coach. According to journalist Alan Nixon’s Patreon page, Bolton Wanderers want him as their goalkeeping coach.
Lonergan, 41, did not appear for the Latics this season. He is a very experienced player, having played over 400 games in his career.

He wrote on Instagram, “Couldn’t have asked for anything more from these lads this season.” More than 20 clean sheets for all three, Sam named Team of the Season, and complete availability and effort every day from him, Tom, and Matty. It has been a pleasure, gentlemen. Thank you to everyone at Wigan for making me feel welcome, but it’s time to move on. I’m excited for what comes next.”

Wigan Athletic ended the 2024/25 season 15th in the league table. They drew 1-1 away against Northampton Town on the last day over the weekend.

Ryan Lowe was chosen to replace Shaun Maloney in March. The former Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End player has the opportunity to make his mark on the group this summer.

Lonergan would have been an asset to Wigan Athletic’s locker room and squad. WAFC’s number one Sam Tickle will have benefited from having someone to learn from.
The former England youth international began his career at Preston North End and worked his way up through the club’s system. He was loaned out as a youth to Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers, and Swindon Town to gain experience.

He went on to play 231 games for the Lilywhites across all competitions. The Preston native has since played for Leeds United, Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Wolves, and Middlesbrough.

Recently, Lonergan has served as a backup option. He formerly played for Liverpool, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, and Everton.

What now for Wigan Athletic and Andy Lonergan?

Wigan Athletic may have to find a successor for Lonergan. It is unclear whether he left WAFC for Bolton Wanderers, and only time will tell if he joins their opponents in the near future.

Lowe’s side has had a strong finish to the season and will look to maintain that momentum into the upcoming season. They are unbeaten in their last eight games.

The Latics will have the opportunity to bring in some reinforcements when the window opens for business. They can also let some players leave to free up space and funds.
