Winners and losers from a Jordan Henderson transfer to Sunderland include Regis Le Bris

Jordan Henderson could be on his way back to Sunderland following their promotion to the Premier League.

Sunderland defeated Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship play-off final, returning to the top division for the first time since 2017.

With a purchase option in place, Enzo Le Fee was Sunderland’s first acquisition upon promotion.

However, sources suggest that Jordan Henderson could return to the Stadium of Light this summer.

Henderson reacted to Sunderland’s promotion after witnessing the final in person at Wembley Stadium, and we’ve now looked at the greatest beneficiaries and losers if the midfielder returns to his hometown club.

Winners from Jordan Henderson transfer to Sunderland

Regis Le Bris

Sunderland’s current roster lacks Premier League experience, which could pose an issue for Regis Le Bris.

Jobe Bellingham’s future is also uncertain, which would significantly weaken Le Bris’ midfield.

However, adding a highly experienced Premier League star and England international would be a significant help for the manager as he prepares for what is expected to be a difficult season.

Sunderland fans

The club’s supporters stand to benefit the most from Henderson’s return to the North East.

Sunderland fans recently reacted strongly to Henderson’s potential return.

They want their former player back, and many believe he is still of interest to a number of Premier League clubs despite his age.

Jordan Henderson

Henderson, who turns 35 in June, is nearing the conclusion of his career, and his next move could be his last.

He’s had a tremendous career, winning the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool.

But ending his career by returning to his hometown club following their promotion would undoubtedly be a memorable moment for the Englishman.

Losers from Jordan Henderson transfer to Sunderland

Nectarios Triantis

Nectarios Triantis recently completed a successful 2024/25 season on loan with Hibernian in Scotland.

He was selected to the SPL Team of the Season, and following an impressive spell away from the club, Triantis’ agent issued a warning to Sunderland, stating that his client would not be a ‘bit-part player’ going forward.

However, the possible arrival would certainly push Triantis down the pecking order, possibly resulting in another exit this summer.

Dan Neil

Similarly, Dan Neil may struggle to secure consistent starts in the Premier League next season.

Sunderland would most likely look to find a replacement for Bellingham, the more advanced of the two midfielders.

Henderson would most likely start in a somewhat deeper role, possibly ahead of Neil.

He should still be a significant player in 2025/26, but Neil’s playing time would be less certain when competing against Henderson.
