Danny Rohl, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, acknowledged that he wants to coach in the Bundesliga “as soon as possible” again.
Under Rohl, Wednesday finished the previous season in 12th place, but since the end of the 2024–25 season, the team has been beset by problems.
EFL charges have been pending over wages that were paid late twice during the season, and the club’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, has turned down two takeover offers from an American consortium.
Though Rohl refuted them in January, there have been ongoing allegations of a deterioration in his relationship with Chansiri.
Rohl’s role has also been the subject of much conjecture, as he has been connected to managerial positions at clubs in his native nation as well as Southampton and Leicester City, among many other clubs in England.

Rohl made it clear in a lengthy interview with the German publication Bild that he believes his future lies outside of Hillsborough.
“If it were up to me, as soon as possible,” was his unambiguous response when asked when he would be returning to the Bundesliga as a head coach. “I grew up with the Bundesliga, so it’s clear that it’s something exceptional.
Working at my best is always the goal for me. I want to play with the top coaches and against the best teams.
“I have the good feeling that I’ve been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles.
” However, his response to a follow-up query regarding RB Leipzig connections was less clear:
“I would prefer not to discuss that.” With clubs in Germany and England showing interest, Rohl views this as “validation of my work” and says, “We’ll see what happens in the summer.”
He also goes into great detail regarding the conditions that led to his arrival on Wednesday.
“Something like that doesn’t scare me; I wanted to build something,” he remarked when asked about the contrast between coaching at Bayern Munich and with the German national team and moving to Sheffield Wednesday with the team at the bottom of the standings.
“We earned 53 points overall in the final 35 games and managed to stay in the league. That season was historic and amazing.
Connections to other clubs have yielded no results for Rohl thus far.
Over the course of his interview, Rohl makes no mention of wanting to stay with Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
They were in the bottom half of the Championship when he was hired on October 13, 2023, at Hillsborough.
He led the team to a comfortable 12th-place finish in 2024–2025 after finishing the season in 20th place, three points above the relegation spots.
However, the connections to other teams this summer haven’t paid off yet.
His stint with Southampton as Ralph Hassenhuttl’s assistant made him a strong candidate for the Southampton position, but the Saints ultimately chose Will Still.
Bundesliga teams have shown interest in him. Werder Bremen was strongly connected to him, but reportedly baulked at the £5 million release fee needed to allow him to leave Sheffield Wednesday.
Additionally, he has been connected to open posts at VfL Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig.
It is still highly doubtful that he will be rejoining Sheffield Wednesday this summer, regardless of where he ends up at the beginning of the new season.
