Women’s Loan Watch | Watford rout: Dowsett maintains a clean sheet

Watford defeated visiting Chesham United by nine goals in a row on Sunday in Group J of the FA Women’s National League Cup, with goalie Rebekah Dowsett keeping a clean sheet. With four goals in the first half and five in the second to maintain their lead in the standings, the goalie relished watching her team thrash their opponents. After two games, Watford has six points, closely followed by QPR, who have also won both of their games. However, the Hornets have a better goal differential. Chesham and Charlton Athletic are both pointless.
Watford’s midfielder Soraya Walsh was left out of the matchday squad on Sunday, but she will try to play when the Hornets play Cheltenham Town at home in the Women’s National League Southern Premier Division on Sunday. Ruby Warwick, meanwhile, finished her maiden ninety minutes for Barking, who won the South East Regional Women’s Premier Division on Sunday at home against Ashford Town in a late 1-0 triumph. With five minutes of regular time left, substitute Eleanor Landen scored the game-winning goal to give the home team their second league win in three games. On Sunday, the Blues will travel to Sutton United in an attempt to maintain their recent success.
In other news, Keira Flannery’s Charlton Athletic debut was successful as the Addicks defeated London rivals Crystal Palace 1-0 at home on Sunday in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2. Mia Ross was replaced at halftime by Flannery, who signed a season-long loan with Charlton on the day of the deadline. Emma Bissell gave the home team the ahead ten minutes later. Katie Bradley’s red card in the 89th minute reduced Charlton to eleven players, but they managed to hold on to defeat Palace, who were demoted from the top division the previous season. Flannery hopes to make her Addicks debut on Sunday when they go to Durham.
Jessie Stapleton also made an appearance on the first day of the BWSL2 season, playing her entire ninety minutes in her Nottingham Forest debut against Newcastle United on Sunday. But with a 2-1 victory, the visitors spoilt the celebration at the City Ground. Newcastle led by two goals at halftime thanks to strikes from Emily Murphy and Molly Pike in the first half. Six minutes after the restart, former Hammer Kirsty Smith cut the deficit in half, but Forest failed to find a way to equalise the score in their first-ever second-tier game.
On Sunday, the Tricky Trees will go to Ipswich Town, another recently promoted team, in an attempt to record their first win of the year. In another level match, Camila Sáez made her Bristol City debut on the road against Birmingham City on Sunday, substituting in the 77th minute at St Andrew’s Stadium. The match concluded when the Chilean international entered the game with her team behind 5-1, but the damage had already been done. Bristol City’s matchday squad did not include Jess Ziu, another West Ham loanee.
