‘Wow’: What one Everton player did at Ewood Park that even had Blackburn Rovers fans applauding
Everton has already recorded their second friendly of the summer after losing to Blackburn Rovers on the road.
David Moyes will be eager to remind everyone that the goal of these games is to improve the players’ level of fitness.
Everton did not have a particularly strong performance, though.
Within the first ten minutes of the game, the Toffees fell behind and were unable to regain the lead, unlike Tuesday night.
Although Harrison Armstrong made an impression on Everton supporters against Accrington Stanley, Saturday’s game did not offer many encouraging moments.
Three new players were brought in this summer, and Mark Travers made his debut against the Championship team.
Mark Travers wows Blackburn Rovers fans on his Everton debut
Having lost Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia as free agents, Everton purchased Travers from AFC Bournemouth.
The 26-year-old made an immediate impact by replacing Harry Tyrer between the sticks.
Travers made a spectacular stop to deny Rovers a second goal after Armstrong gave up a free-kick just on the outskirts of the Everton box.
Harry Pickering believed he had scored, but the Everton rookie denied the home team by flying across his goal.
Even the home crowd believed they had scored, and several of their supporters even exited to cheer on Travers’ save.
Following Travers’ arrival on Merseyside, it is thought that Everton has now put Tyrer up for sale.
Travers made a great save in the second half, but there wasn’t much he could do to stop Rovers from gaining the lead.
Everton have solid backup to Jordan Pickford
Travers was not bought to replace Jordan Pickford, with the England number one firmly the first choice at Everton.
The Englishman is gradually making a comeback to the team after a lengthy absence, and Jamie Carragher dubbed Pickford Everton’s greatest player last season.
Nonetheless, Travers’ performance, which shown that he is more than capable of offering Pickford adequate backup, will please Moyes.
Joe Thomas of Liverpool Echo commented on the save, saying: “Travers made an absolutely amazing save to push over a curling effort from Harry Pickering.” What a stop, wow.
The 26-year-old may be anticipating some minutes in cup competitions this season, and he will be seen more throughout the summer.
