Wrexham AFC appears to have already begun planning for the Championship.

After only one season in League One, they were promoted automatically and now face survival in the second tier next season.

With that in mind, they’ve already been linked with moves for two top-tier, experienced strikers who, if signed, should aid their efforts.

However, with an uncertain future ahead of him, the links spell more bad news for club legend Paul Mullin.

Wrexham target double-figure Plymouth and Cardiff City scorers

Despite having talented forwards, Plymouth Argyle and Cardiff City are swapping places with Wrexham in League One.

Despite playing for struggling teams, Ryan Hardie and Callum Robinson each scored 10 and 12 goals this season.

Despite the fact that both are nearing the end of their careers, neither is likely to be dropped by their clubs and still have much to offer a second-tier side; many will believe they’d be even more productive in a better-functioning side.

Journalist Darren Witcoop reports that both men are on Wrexham’s radar.

Wrexham’s Ryan Hardie and Callum Robinson transfer links spell bad news for Paul Mullin.

Even in League One, Mullin struggled to get minutes.

Throughout the season, he only started nine games and scored three goals in 26 appearances.

Now in his 30s and having never played above the third tier in his career, his form does not indicate readiness for Championship football.

He’s already had to compete with Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Ollie Palmer, and Steven Fletcher this season, with Smith and Rodriguez starting for the final three months of the season as Phil Parkinson led North Wales to victory and promotion to the Championship.

Hardie or Robinson’s arrival would almost certainly elevate them to the top of the pecking order, pushing Mullin further down.

Mullin’s contract with Wrexham expires in the summer of 2027, but if he wants to maximise his remaining years at the top level, he should consider leaving the club as they have outgrown his abilities.

Wrexham must be ruthless to stand a chance in the Championship.

Discarding Mullin this summer would pave the way for a difficult but necessary transfer window.

Wrexham’s rapid rise means that they still have players like Mullin who were originally signed to get them out of the National League and League Two. To compete in the second tier, you need a completely different type of player.

The journey at the Stok Cae Ras has been all about the characters, with whom fans have developed a deep connection, enhanced by their behind-the-scenes look via Disney+ documentary. Welcome to Wrexham.

Mullin, along with owners Ryan Reynolds, has almost been the main character throughout the journey, but there’s no denying that the Red Dragons have reached a new level.

These transfer rumours are bad news for Mullin’s future at Wrexham, but if it isn’t Robinson or Hardie, it will be someone else. This summer appears to be the natural time for the striker to leave the club that has played such an important role in his development.
