Huddersfield Town’s 2017 promotion-winning goalkeeper Danny Ward is reportedly of interest to Championship newcomers Wrexham.
After three successive promotions, Wrexham are prepared for life in the Championship, with speculation of big transfer intentions prevalent.
A number of high-profile figures have been connected with a move to the club, which played in the National League as recently as 2023.
Patrick Bamford of Leeds United was even connected with the Welsh club, but any idea of a move was quickly dismissed.
Wrexham eyes on Danny Ward
According to reporter Alan Nixon’s Patreon page, Wrexham are interested in signing free agent goalie Ward.
The 31-year-old is free after being released by Leicester City, who utilized him as a cover option for the majority of his seven-year spell.
A transfer to Wrexham would bring him full circle, as he began his career there before being signed by Liverpool.
Danny Ward’s career path
Opportunities at Anfield were scarce, therefore he was loaned to Morecambe, Aberdeen, and Huddersfield.
He had a fantastic season with the latter, playing in goal as the Terriers won promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2016/17 season.
Ward is still revered by Huddersfield fans for saving three penalties in the semi-final shootout against Reading, which advanced the Terriers to the play-off final.
He was linked with a return to Yorkshire with Sheffield United in January 2024, but no deal was reached.
Ward may not have seen much action in Leicester colours, but he would provide much-needed depth to Wrexham’s goalkeeping department following Mark Howard’s departure.
He would also provide higher-level expertise to Phil Parkinson’s team, which will be required to survive in the second tier.
