Wrexham set to pay £7m for ‘fantastic’ Ipswich Town star in club-record transfer as catch emerges

Wrexham set to pay £7m for ‘fantastic’ Ipswich Town star in club-record transfer as catch emerges

The signing of a Championship player would be another evidence that Wrexham is currently one of the EFL’s most

financially ambitious teams.

Last season, Wrexham made history by earning consecutive promotions, and with their summer transfer window

business, the Red Dragons have indicated that they intend to do the unthinkable next season.

The Red Dragons have made some noteworthy acquisitions this summer, including the signing of Josh Windass by

Wrexham following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday.

Kieffer Moore and Wrexham have recently been negotiating a deal for the 49-cap Welsh international and prolific

Sheffield United striker.

In a move that would break Wrexham’s record transfer cost, Phil Parkinson and the Red Dragons’ recruitment team

are now targeting another Championship player as a transfer target.

Wrexham to smash record transfer fee to sign Ipswich Town forward Nathan Broadhead

With Windass playing number ten behind Ryan Hardie and Sam Smith, the Red Dragons are set to have one of the

most potent attacking trios in the 2025–26 Championship season.

Hardie, who joined former club record signing Sam Smith, was Wrexham’s first big summer acquisition, having

joined from Plymouth Argyle earlier this month.

The Welsh powerhouses shattered that record last week when they signed Liberato Cacace, a defender. Lewis

O’Brien, a former Swansea City midfielder who was acquired from Nottingham Forest last week for £5 million, then

overtook this.

Now, Wrexham are set to smash their transfer fee record for the third time this summer, as the club target Ipswich

Town forward Nathan Broadhead.

Sky Sports News reporter Anthony Joseph said on X: “Wrexham have made an approach for Ipswich Town for

forward Nathan Broadhead.

“Wrexham is reportedly willing to spend £7 million on the Wales international, which would break their previous

record fee. This summer, Ipswich has no plans to sell Broadhead.

Under Kieran McKenna, Broadhead made 18 appearances for Ipswich in the previous season, although he only

managed two goals in the top level.

The deal is unfeasible, since Ipswich has reportedly stated that they have “no intention to sell Broadhead this

summer” in preparation for the forthcoming second-tier season.

In any case, Wrexham’s hiring of the Welshman would be another noteworthy economic move.

Nathan Broadhead’s career path ahead of Wrexham move

Broadhead’s first EFL loan stint was with Burton Albion in League One after he started his career in the Everton

development systems.

The Welshman scored 13 goals in 27 games for the Black Cats during his breakthrough third-tier campaign while on

loan at Sunderland in the 2021–2022 League One season.

In 2021, Lee Johnson, his former Sunderland manager, told ChronicleLive of Broadhead: “I thought he was

fantastic.” When he doesn’t get the ball, he never gives up.

Club name Games played Goals Assists
Everton 2 0 0
Burton Albion (loan) 22 3 3
Sunderland (loan) 27 13 0
Wigan Athletic (loan) 22 5 0
Ipswich Town 83 23 12

He isn’t one of those attackers who stops after scoring ten runs because the ball isn’t coming.

“He keeps putting himself forward, either with the ball to feet or behind.”

Broadhead was signed by the Tractor Boys in January 2023 for £1.5 million following a disappointing loan with

Wigan Athletic. Since then, he has scored 23 goals and provided 9 assists in 83 Ipswich games.

The 27-year-old Broadhead would provide Parkinson a lot of depth and versatility in his front lineup because he can

play as a left-winger, striker, or number ten.
