Xavier Amaechi racking up the goals for Plymouth Argyle in pre-season

Summer signing Xavier Amaechi has arguably been the stand-out performer for Plymouth Argyle in pre-season and continued to impress in the 6-0 victory over Torquay United at Plainmoor.

The 24-year-old attacking player scored the opening two goals against the Gulls on Wednesday night, including a superb strike when he cut inside from the right flank and fired the ball left-footed into the far corner of the net.

It was the first time Amaechi had scored for the Pilgrims in one of the pre-season matches played in front of fans. However, there have been two other games played and Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley revealed the Arsenal academy graduate had netted a total of three times in those.

The first was a behind-closed-doors game on July 5, with no details released by Argyle or their opponents, and the other was a full-scale inter-squad match at Home Park last Saturday.

It has been clear from the games that Argyle have played in public, particularly those against Truro City and Torquay, that Amaechi, who has joined the Pilgrims on a three-year contract after leaving German 2. Bundesliga side FC Magdeburg, has a lot of attacking potential.

Cleverley said: “I will always be the type to sort of keep a lid on that but he’s a very intelligent player, athletically quick. The best thing for me as the coach is if you want to double up on the inside of Xavier he can go down the outside as well.
