Yakou Meite teases fans over possible Reading FC return with latest social media post

Reading v Wigan

Fans have been speculating about Yakou Meite’s future all summer, with many anticipating a return to Reading. Meite is now a free agent after being released by Cardiff City this summer following their relegation from the Championship to League One. Meite uploaded a picture on Instagram of himself wearing a Reading training shirt with the phrase ‘In the tank’ as he works to improve his fitness ahead of the 2025/26 season.

While he is yet to sign with a club, multiple reports have linked him with a return to Berkshire. Meite remains a popular character among players, staff, and fans, and he was seen on the pitch at the end of Reading’s final home game of the 2024/25 season, greeting former teammates, staff, and their families.

In 2016, the Ivory Coast international joined Reading on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. He spent seven seasons with Reading, playing 165 games in all competitions and scoring 47 times. He struggled after leaving Reading for Cardiff on a free transfer, scoring only five Championship goals in 72 appearances. It remains to be seen whether the Royals will make a bid to bring Meite back to the club, as Noel Hunt is still looking to strengthen his assault before the season starts.
