Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has confirmed that new signing Christian Wade won’t be involved this weekend against Huddersfield Giants. Wade made the move over from rugby union last week, joining up with his new teammates in the 13-man code just days after parting ways with Premiership club Gloucester.
He got his first taste of rugby league just a few days after joining the Cherry and Whites, playing on the wing for the reserves against Castleford Tigers last week. By all accounts, he demonstrated some talent in that game, but it’s evident he needs to continue to learn the game. That is why he will not play against the Giants this week in Dewsbury, as Matt Peet wants him to get another run out in the second string before moving into Super League contention.
Matt Peet explains why Christian Wade won’t play for Wigan Warriors this week
“He will not play,” Peet stated this week. “He will play another game in our reserves before we reassess. We must understand that Christian is new to rugby league and has just finished a long, grueling season. It was always agreed that we would refresh him and accelerate his learning through practice and reserve games.
All of the skills that helped him succeed in rugby union are transferable, including his athleticism, the way he carries himself, and, most significantly, his willingness to learn rapidly. He made a lot of friends when he put his hand up to play reserves last week. “I proposed the alternative to him, and he was quite interested. You wouldn’t find many athletes who would be willing to play a game with less than a week’s rest and only one training session – I was astonished.”

He suffered a rib injury at Catalans Dragons last month and was forced to miss Wigan’s most recent game against Salford Red Devils.
He’s still in a little pain,” Peet explained. “He could play at a push but it’s just whether we decide to take that step just yet or let him heal a bit more before we throw him in.”
