Rob Edwards will be announced by Middlesbrough as Michael Carrick’s replacement prior to the 2025–2026 Championship season.
Following their unsuccessful bid to finish in the top six the previous season, Middlesbrough fired Michael Carrick earlier in June, ending his 136-game tenure as Boro’s manager.
Following a fruitful meeting with Boro owner Steve Gibson, former Luton Town manager Rob Edwards will be introduced as the next Boro manager in the coming days after reaching a compensation agreement with the Hatters.
In his debut season at the Riverside, Edwards will be trying to guarantee a play-off spot after Middlesbrough placed ninth last season.
His hiring hasn’t persuaded one Championship expert, though.

In his first few months as Boro’s manager,
Edwards has a lot of work to do to establish that he was the right man to take Carrick’s place.
According to a previous report by EFL Analysis, Middlesbrough wanted former Leicester City manager Steve Cooper after Carrick left.
We also disclosed that Edwards was selected above Cooper, the first pick, mostly due to Boro’s inability to agree on terms.
Prior to Edwards’ arrival, Middlesbrough supporters selected Danny Rohl as their preferred manager to succeed Carrick as Sheffield Wednesday’s current manager.
The Luton icon has a lot to prove, as Edwards appears to be the unpopular option among the Boro supporters and in the Middlesbrough boardroom.
One expert in the Championship is unsure if his appointment will be upheld. “I’m not overawed with the appointment,” Justin Peach stated on the Second Tier podcast.
“I’m not a big admirer of Rob Edwards, and based on what I recently said, I believe he needs to move into a position where he can develop and has a little less pressure.
At Middlesbrough, on the other hand, I believe he’s coming into a role where, in the end, there will be pressure to qualify for the playoffs, and the team is prepared for him.
Does he have players that can play his style? There is a change there because Rob Edwards places a lot of importance on wing-backs, but Michael Carrick doesn’t quite feel the same way.
“In the end, they need to make a decision because the preseason is quickly approaching and things happening this late could affect the upcoming season.”
The win rates of the four previously listed teams do not auger well for the incoming Boro manager.

During his first summer transfer window as manager, Edwards will be looking to leave his mark on the Boro team.
Alfie Doughty, a former Luton star, has been linked to Middlesbrough and is now a very genuine contender to be Edwards’ first Boro acquisition as he approaches.
Edwards has much to do to instill trust in the Boro supporters ahead of the 2025–26 Championship campaign, especially when comparing his win rate as manager to that of his predecessor Carrick and recent targets Cooper and Rohl.
The Welshman has a lot to prove in his first season in the Boro dugout, especially considering that his win rate is far lower than that of Carrick, Cooper, and Rohl.
Edwards’ Luton team was thrashed 5-1 on their most recent trip to Middlesbrough.
