Rob Atkinson had a fantastic loan stay the previous season, and Pompey was eager to re-sign him this summer. The centre-back, however, has subsequently signed a new contract to stay with Bristol City.
During the transfer window,Pompey has a significant defence dilemma.
Neil Allen, chief sports writer for The News, has come to that conclusion and questioned if the Blues will try to recruit another centre-back this summer.
It follows a significant setback for John Mousinho’s team in their window-based attempt to re-sign Rob Atkinson.
A major setback: Atkinson signs a new contract with Bristol City
Portsmouth’s hopes for a permanent agreement were dashed on June 23, 2025, when Bristol City announced Atkinson had signed a new long-term contract through 2028.

In his previous 15 loan appearances throughout the second part of the season, he shown defensive sturdiness and two crucial goals against Derby.
Portsmouth’s Centre-back Dilemma
Shaughnessy, Poole, Bowat, Matthews, and the unpopular McIntyre and Towler are Portsmouth’s six contractual center-halves at the moment.
The club must choose whether to sell one or two of the excess players (presumably McIntyre and Towler) or look at making another defensive signing now that Atkinson is out.
