‘I am not going to close any doors’: Huddersfield Town legend Jonathan Hogg on future, failure and club rediscovering Terrier spirit again

Jonathan Hogg will travel to his beloved North Yorkshire countryside this summer, like he always does.

The ironman for Huddersfield Town typically prepares for the demands of a new football season by hammering the

steep slopes of the Eston Hills near his Middlesbrough home.

As usual, this off-season will make the fitness enthusiast quite happy. He will also fit in some additional time for

reflection while holding a fishing rod.

Time was called, seemingly, on a 12-year playing career at the club which has stolen his heart in last Saturday’s game

against Leyton Orient.

When the granite Teessider was replaced in the 65th minute of his 410th and final appearance in the blue and white,

supporters, his people, gave him an emotional send-off that will be the only thing that will stick in the memory of a

forgettable afternoon from a Town standpoint.

The 36-year-old is now thinking about the next phase of his football career and, possibly, his voyage to Huddersfield

after learning that his playing contract won’t be extended past this season.

“I will have a good think when I am fishing,” Hogg stated.

“Look at Cristiano Ronaldo; he is forty years old and still playing. Age is only a numerical value.

“Why not, as long as you believe you can do it and feel healthy and fit? I’m still able and having fun with it.

“We’ll observe the situation. I will not declare myself retired and shut doors. I’m not.

“I might take advantage of an opportunity if it presents itself. Over the summer, I’m going to sit down and see where

I go from here.

Speaking of sit-downs, Hogg and owner/chairman Kevin Nagle had one this week, which increased the likelihood

that he will continue to work for the team in some form.

“Seeing the town thrive, getting the fans on board and building that culture we had was massive and unbelievable to

be involved in and I’d love everyone to get back to that.”

Hogg’s main regret remains the 2023-24 relegation, which many say the club has not yet got over.

A fairly substantial clear-out of players coming off contract who were part of that squad now allows them to turn a

page at least.

Hogg himself is among that number. He may now surely have a different role to play at the club he loves.

Huddersfield still need him and you sense he needs them.
