Kwame Poku, a winger for Peterborough United, has been the target of a contract offer from Birmingham City, although 25 teams are apparently vying for his services.
According to Birmingham World, the Blues are committed to signing Poku and have already offered a high-profile contract to do so when his Peterborough contract ends this summer. Craig Gardner, the technical director, has been making every effort to persuade the winger to join St Andrew’s at Knighthead Park, but it’s difficult since there are so many other teams interested.
According to a recent Give Me Sport report, 26 clubs—including Sunderland, Sheffield United, Celtic, and Rangers—have already been in touch with Poku’s representation. The Black Cats will be in the Premier League next season after winning the Championship play-off final, so it could be difficult for the Blues to defeat them in particular.
Birmingham is still making every effort, though, and Barry Fry, the former manager of the Blues and director of football at Peterborough, thinks Poku will turn down other offers to join Chris Davies’ team. Peterborough will be entitled to a compensation sum because the winger is under 24 years old, but only if Poku’s next team is located in this nation.
The acquisition of a new winger is one of Birmingham’s top targets for the forthcoming summer transfer window since Davies was occasionally a touch weak in wide areas. Scott Wright and Emil Hansson didn’t start as well as expected, and Willum Willumsson and Kieran Dowell had to play a little out of place because there wasn’t a right winger.
Poku, who plays on the right for Peterborough, can play as an offensive midfielder or on either side. Davies values such adaptability, and the Blues’ management thinks Poku would fit right in with a revamped starting lineup.
When Peterborough won the Vertu Trophy final at Wembley Stadium, Birmingham supporters were able to have a close-up glimpse at Poku. Despite not scoring beneath the arch, the winger was a clinical player in League One, making 27 appearances in 2024–2025 and dishing out 12 goals and eight assists.
However, with so many elite clubs fighting for Poku’s services, Birmingham won’t have an easy time landing him. After all, he is a highly sought-after player since players of his caliber seldom become available on the free agent market, at least not at the Championship level.
Poku hasn’t decided yet, and before his contract expires on June 30, additional negotiations are anticipated with Birmingham and several other teams. Although it’s a story to closely follow, the Blues shouldn’t hold out hope. Rather, Gardner ought to—and most likely will—look into other options in the event that Poku chooses to relocate.
