Dundee’s defeat at Kilmarnock sparks more VAR confusion as boss Tony Docherty reveals SFA talks planned

The Dens Park side are still not safe from automatic relegation after the 3-2 loss at Rugby Park.

After his club lost 3-2 at Kilmarnock due to another VAR controversy, leaving them in the relegation zone, Dundee

For the second consecutive week, manager Tony Docherty has been left in the dark.

Referee Don Robertson was summoned to the monitor following the interval to assess a potential spot-kick for the

Dark Blues, as Killie had taken the lead through a penalty kick from Danny Armstrong in the first half.

Home captain Kyle Vassell seemed to push Simon Murray.

However, VAR official Gavin Duncan did not show Robertson any video of the incident, even though he was forced to

wait by the screen for a long time.

Rather, it was determined that because the accident was unconventional, it was outside of VAR’s purview.

It was another controversial moment for the Dens Park team after they had a goal disallowed by VAR in last

weekend’s 2-1 loss to Motherwell.

Docherty stated: “Unfortunately, I can’t clear that up because I’ve just been seen speaking to the referee, to Don

Robertson himself, and he couldn’t clear it up for me.” He also vowed to question Willie Collum, the head of referee

operations for the Scottish FA.

“Confusion persists.” That’s exactly what happened fifteen to twenty minutes after the game.

I was informed that the referee had been summoned to the monitor. He declared on the pitch that he did not believe it to be a penalty.

Docherty: ‘It’s a penalty kick’

The first thing the VAR did after calling him over was to determine whether the play was onside.

After it was determined that it was out of the box, it was onside.

“They never displayed a picture to the referee.

I’ve seen the picture, and according to the letter of the law, that contact within the box constitutes a penalty kick.

“Hey, I’d rather not be this manager. that discusses the choices made by referees once a week.

“But the referee was called over and then was not shown an image. I don’t understand that.

“I’ve spoken to him [Robertson] since I came back in. He’s a good guy, Don, he’s a good referee; one of the best, I

think.

“I think there’s an element of, whether it’s, embarrassment and confusion for him as well, that he’s got called across

and then not shown an image.”

Lyall Cameron did level things up for Dundee in the 76th minute but just a minute later Bruce Anderson nodded in a

Liam Donnelly cross to restore Killie’s advantage.

Docherty: Ross County game ‘really big’

Robbie Deas nodded in an Armstrong corner to extend their advantage in the first minute of injury time.

However, four minutes later, Cameron gave Dundee hope once more, but the home team held on.

With two games left, the loss puts Dundee in third-bottom, although they are still in danger of dropping.

A victory over Ross County, who are two points behind, on Wednesday will be sufficient to prevent both automatic

relegation and a play-off spot, as cellar team St Johnstone is already within five points of the Dark Blues.

Lyall Cameron’s double was not enough for Dundee in the 3-2 defeat to Kilmarnock.
Docherty went on to say, “It’s crucial that I now concentrate my team on a really big game on Wednesday
night against Ross County.” And we’ll do just that.

“We’ll examine our role in the loss. And there’s a lot to consider there; a 2-0 away win ought to be

sufficient to secure a result.

“We knew the order of the games and what we were up against heading into the bottom-six fixtures.

“We were aware of our obligations, and they are now very clear to us.”
